Many people don’t realise that lighting can be used as an interesting feature in the home. A room can be transformed simply by taking a creative approach to how you light the space, and in many cases, it’s change that’s quick and easy to make. Here, we look at ways to use lighting as a feature in your home. Some of these suggestions are not easy to implement and it's best to consider them before starting a home refurbishment: they will require new electrical points installed - hence, walls and ceilings will have to be made good afterwards.
Use spotlights instead of standing lamps
For smaller rooms, consider removing standing lamps and replacing them with spotlights. Not only will you have more floor space, but you can use the spotlights to create a unique ambiance and draw attention to statement pieces of furniture.
Add large mirrors to empty walls to reflect light
Interior designers have been using mirrors for many years to make small spaces feel bigger, so it’s a tried and tested method. Adding a large mirror to a wall can literally double the amount of perceived space in a room, and as it will reflect light, it makes a living area seem much brighter and welcoming. Go for a gold-edged mirror to add a touch of glamour and luxury to your décor.
Create a mosaic feature and use lights to draw attention to it
Feature walls have become quite popular, so you probably already have friends who are using the technique to add interest to a room without dominating the full space with heavy designs. To stand out from the crowd, consider creating a mosaic feature instead. Buy some porcelain tiles in a range of colours, and design your own finish. You could create a large flower, a sunset scene, a random pattern, or anything else that you can think of. The only limit is your imagination. Once it’s finished, draw attention to it with some spotlights.

Experiment with different coloured lights
When most people think about how to light their home, using different coloured lights rarely even crosses their minds. If you like your home to be a little bit unusual, give coloured lights some serious thought. They’re unique, funky, and can totally change the ambience in any room.
Use candles to create an intimate atmosphere
Lighting isn’t limited to the electrical variety! For romantic evenings, have a range of candles at hand to create a welcoming and calming ambience. Not only will they look great, but you could save a fortune on your utility bills. Always exercise caution and common sense when using candles, and never leave them burning unattended.
When you think outside of the box, there are many ways that you can change the look of your home just by changing your lighting. Have you ever used any of these ideas? What were the results like?
